For anyone looking for a break down on the south coast of England, there is not need to look further than Southampton. This wonderful coastal city offers a little something for everyone and caters for all sorts of tastes. On top of the usual offerings of great restaurants and nightlife, there are some unique destinations to take in.

First of all, for anyone with an interest in musicals and plays, the musical theatre offers a wide array of different productions, some of them taken straight from the West End in London. The theatre also puts on a wide variety of different forms of entertainment for the public, from ballet to stand up comedy.

For those who are more interested in history than entertainment, the hall of aviation tells the story of a number of different companies. 26 different companies are on offer and you can look into their development and all of the different planes that they have engineered. Moreover, the history of the legendary spitfire is also told. Designed and built in the city, the plane played a famously important role in the defense of Britain in the second world war.

As well as having a rich aviation history, the city also plays host to a great maritime past. It has become very famous for all of the cruise ships that regularly pass through the docks. If you are looking for a fantastic spot from where to catch a great view of these enormous ships, then head over to western bank of Southampton Water. Moreover, the city also plays host to different displays throughout the year, particularly the famous boat show that attracts in over 100,000 people form around the world to see over 850 boats.

On the same theme, the maritime museum is another way to gain a fascinating insight into the importance that this city has played in the country\’s maritime past. Possibly the most interesting part of the museum is the Titanic Voices exhibition that tells the tragic story of the maiden voyage of the Titanic which sailed from the docks on the tenth of April 1912. Some original artifacts and photographs are on display and offer a wonderful insight in the tragedy.

Finally, for those who just wish to spend some time doing some shopping and building up their wardrobe, the Westquay shopping centre offers everything you could want. On its opening in 2000, the centre was the largest city centre shopping area in Europe and boasted a bountiful variety of outlets.

These are just a few of the great attractions for any visitor to the city.
