Ulverston – Cumbria And Some Of Its Past And Future

The town of Ulverston – Cumbria is a market town in the South Lake district area of Cumbria, north west part in England. Their most visible landmark is the Hoad Monument which was made of concrete and built in 1850. The monument was built to commemorate a local resident and former statesman known as John Barrow.

Along with this monument there is a scenic views of the surrounding areas of Morecambe Bay and several parts of Lake District. The town is known to have so many pubs and shops too for its local residents. Most are located near the Market Street where at the head of the street there is a war memorial that was put there for all of those who died in World War One.

It was on the month of April the 28th in the year of 2009 that an earthquake hit the town. The earthquake measured 3.7 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt in the South Cumbria and also areas in north Lancashire too. However, there was no real damage done to the town.

Ulverston had its name recorded first into the Domesday book as the town of Ulvrestun. There were other variations of its name that was recorded over the years such as Oluestonam and Uluereston. The charter for the town was then granted during the year 1280 by Edward the 1st. This was also done for the market which was every Thursday. But modern Ulverston now keeps it open on Thursday and also Saturday.

Throughout the years the town was known as the birth place for several famous people. Sir John Barrow it is known was born in Dragley Beck. Another famous person is Norman Birkett. He represented Britain at the Nuremburg Trails. Others include The mother of rock and roll singing artist Bill Haley, Maude Green. Francis Arthur Jefferson, who was a soldier who was awarded with the Victorian Cross. Also Stan Laurel of the famous comedy team of Laurel and Hardy.

The town has the Ulverston railway station that serves the whole town for transportation on the Furness Line, which runs from Barrow-in-Furness up to Lancaster, and from there it makes its final destination at the Manchester Airport.

This railway is only a short distance in the centre of the town. This town also is served by many buses too.

They will parade through the town and show what looks like a stream of lights. This event culminates a lively some theatrical performances and also a great fire works show too. This takes place inside of Ford Park and started in 2007.
