Royston – Hertfordshire is a busy market town located in the northern part of Hertfordshire in England. The center of London is only 43 miles away. Light industry provides employment for many of its 16,000 residents, and the town has a healthy economy.

The town’s history covers a period of two millennia. When the Romans were in occupation, Royston was set up at the junction of two large roads – Ermine Street and Icknield Way. In prehistoric times, Icknield Way was a route that enabled traders to travel through the surrounding chalk hills.

When the Normans occupied the area, Lady Roysia established a wayside cross at the junction of Ermine Street and Icknield Way. Although the cross has perished, the stone base survived and is now on display near the junction. It became known as Roysia’s Stone. This is how the name ‘Royston’ came about.

Royston is on the border which separates the counties of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Towns in close proximity are Letchworth, Hertford, Baldock and Cambridge. Royston is a medieval town with a rich history which is highlighted in the local museum. Here, you can see all sorts of collections and ancient memorabilia.

The Royston Tapestry will definitely interest visitors. The project has not yet been completed. In 1992, Jane Vincent, the curator at the time, decided that a large, eye-catching and imaginative tapestry should be created. It will show a sequence of events from the region’s history. Once complete, it will be 110 feet long. It can be viewed in the front area of the museum.

Another unique attraction is the Royston Cave. The only other cave similar to it is in Czechoslovakia. It has a bell-shaped, circular chamber that is covered with pagan carvings. The cave’s origins are not known, but it is believed that the Knights Templar used it during the 13th Century. It was rediscovered accidentally in 1742 by a man digging a hole.

Another must-see local attraction is Wimpole Hall which is 6 miles from Royston. On the estate is a magnificent mansion designed by Elsie Bambridge. Her father was Rudyard Kipling, the famed English writer and poet.

There is no shortage of entertainment establishments in Royston – Hertfordshire. Tourists can enjoy many excellent pubs, restaurants, a movie house, clubs, and music bars. Shopping centers are modern, but there are some lovely little shops which reflect Royston’s early days. Accommodation ranges from B&Bs, cottages and hotels, to camp sites and caravan parks.
