The lively parish town of Stroud – Gloucestershire is found in the western region of the Cotswold in England. The natural beauty, that the Cotswold is well known for, surrounds the entire town. Stroud is noted for its very steep streets and its vibrant, energetic cafe culture.
Stroud is the oldest market town in the county of Gloucestershire. It has kept its character despite industrial development that began in the 18th Century. It first accrued its wealth as far back as the 14th Century through the textile trade. There were more than 150 wool mills in the surrounding valleys. The mills are still used to house light industry, and the town continues to prosper.
Independently owned cafes and stores are plentiful in the town. The lively economy is largely due to the success of these. In fact, they do such brisk business that national shopping chains have recently opened stores in Stroud. The town is therefore a popular shopping venue for residents in the surrounding towns and villages.
A number of artists, craftsmen and alternative health practitioners have set themselves up in Stroud. One of the finest galleries is the Rope Store Studio Gallery at The Shambles, which is off High Street. Tourists come to Stroud to relax in the magnificent countryside, to visit the many galleries and shops, and to learn about the history of the textile mills.
The Museum in the Park is a new attraction. It is located north of Stroud in Stafford Park. This family-friendly center has colorful and innovative displays, plus mammoth and dinosaur remains that will especially fascinate the kids. You can also see a genuine Roman altar, two ancient lawnmowers and many interesting paintings.
It has been said that Woodchester Park, just 5 miles from Stroud, is one of the most captivating buildings in England. Construction was never finished because builders abandoned the project in 1868. Even though the building has no floors or ceilings, it is still worth a visit. This Gothic Revival house is now in the care of the Woodchester Mansion Trust.
The Painswick Rococo Garden is yet another draw card for visitors. This ‘secret garden’ was restored using a painting by artist Thomas Robins. The 18th Century buildings on the land have also been refurbished. Visitors to Stroud – Gloucestershire should definitely include this on their sight-seeing itineraries. There is a profusion of wild flora, water features, a plunge pool, a fish pond, a restaurant, and a shop.
