More than likely, you have never been aware of a tiny borough in PA referred to as State College. This simply named town is really a big college town with lots of activities to discover. You may not be aware of it, but surfing is a Polynesian innovation that dates back several hundred years. Europeans first saw it when they visited Tahiti in 1767. Hawaii of course was settled by Polynesian immigrants from Tahiti almost one thousand years ago, and brought the sport with them. It was in Hawaii that surfing first caught on with Euro-Americans back in 1907.

It is inaccurate to call St. Augustine, Florida as America’s oldest city. Native American mound cities in the Upper Midwest and the Anasazi Pueblo cities of southwestern Colorado predate St. Augustine by several hundred years, as do Mexico City and the ancient Mayan city of Tikal further south. However, St. Augustine was the first permanent, named European settlement in what is now the United States, established only a little over seventy years after Columbus’ historic voyage.
