This is another of our exciting family adventures in Guatemala. This time my husband and I decided that we wanted to take our son for a visit to Semuc Champey and the Lanquin Caves. For that we had to stay in the nearby town of Cobn. But let’s talk about the town first: Cobn is a beautiful town located in the Alta Verapaz Department of Guatemala. It is located 1320 meters above sea level so it gets a bit chilly at night. It is also one of the major coffee producers of the country. Plus it is located among mountains and forests that guard one of Guatemala’s treasures: the Monja Blanca Orchid. (this country’s national flower).

The Black-necked Stilt is a locally abundant shorebird of American wetlands and coastlines. They also have partially webbed feet, which allow them to swim – but they rarely do. Stilts’ legs are longer in proportion to their bodies than any other bird except the flamingo. The tail is white with some grey banding. A continuous area of black extends from the back along to the head. There, it forms a cap covering the entire head from the top to just below eye-level, with the exception of the areas surrounding the bill and a small white spot above the eye.

White lipped Peccaries are the big and aggressive brothers of the collared peccary. They have even killed jaguars when trying to defend themselves. That is why white lipped peccaries are considered as the most dangerous peccary. This species typically prefers dense, humid tropical forest, usually with primary growth, although their habitat also includes dry savannas and tropical dry forests. They live in Central and South America.

Basilisks are lizards that have large hind feet with flaps of skin between each toe. This allows them to move quickly across the water and gives them the appearance of “walking on water”. Because of that they were given the nickname “Jesus Lizard”. They are native to Panama, Belize, and northwestern Colombia and Costa Rica. In Guatemala, this species is widespread, found practically anywhere where there is a water source. This species can be found in tropical and subtropical wet, moist, and dry forests.

The Turquoise-browed Motmot is a migratory bird very well-known in its range. It inhabits Central America from south-east Mexico mostly the Yucatn Peninsula, to Costa Rica, where it is common and not considered threatened. It lives in fairly open habitats such as forest edge, gallery forest and scrubland.
