Having the right moving boxes for a self move can make the task much easier. Consider planning how many boxes, of what size, and where to get them before beginning the packing process. Labels on the outside of the boxes greatly help the unpacking process. Disposal of the boxes, either in the garage for later use or taking them to a recycling station, is one of the final steps in a self move.
Knowing how many boxes you will need is an essential stage of the planning for a self move. Going through the rooms that you will pack and dividing the items into categories can help you judge the number of boxes that will best suit your needs. For example, you may wish to pack dishes separately from pots and pans. Using this method may make unpacking in your new home more organized.
New moving boxes typically come in small, medium and large sizes. These boxes are flattened and banded together into bundles of like sizes when you buy them. If you look at the band carefully, you will see a little tab that overlaps the opposite side. By pulling this, the band releases and there is no need to search around for a box cutter to free your boxes and get to work.
The simplest way to get moving boxes is to buy them from a moving supply company. Then you are assured of strong cardboard and standard shaped boxes, which makes loading a moving truck much easier. There are no strange markings on the outside to get in the way of your labels. And, if you buy extras, often you can return them to the point of purchase for credit.
Sometimes, however, there is no room in the budget for purchasing new boxes. This is where you may have to get creative. Reusing strong boxes, like computer, printer or other small appliance boxes can be a good suggestion. Asking at the grocery store also can yield useful results in banana boxes, or reasonably clean shipping boxes. Sometimes the local liquor store will have good wine cases they might give you.
When you have collected the boxes that you believe are sufficient, think about other packing materials. If you have many breakable items, you might consider paper to wrap them in. For fragile possessions, paper and Styrofoam popcorn will keep them separate during the move. Items bumping together may cause breakage. You can get packing materials from most moving supply companies.
Have a couple good markers for labeling outside of boxes once you have packed them. Label them by the room they should go to in your new location. If kitchen items, you might wish to be even more specific, adding the type of item in the box. Kitchen, silverware or kitchen, pots can be very helpful the first few nights in a new place.
Often, overly heavy moving boxes are a problem later on in the move when people are getting tired. Another reason to keep the boxes of medium weight is ease of distributing the weight of the boxes in a moving truck. Also, it is a good idea to lift with your knees to avoid back injury. If you have question, remember you can always ask a professional for advice.
