Welshpool – Powys is such a fun and entertaining vacation spot that you will never run out of entertaining things to do. This charming town is located in the Severn Valley in mid Wales four miles from the border of England. This town is an excellent place to stay and explore the surrounding countryside and communities of the borderlands. The region is steeped in history, and many castles and fortifications are nearby.
This area was historically noted as an agriculture center, and today it is still the primary location for the sale of breeding sheep. In the 1200s, Welshpool was founded to serve as the capital of Powys. Documentation of the first market is noted to be in 1252. The area grew to become known as a livestock service center. Today it is still serves as Europe’s largest one-day sheep market.
The local economy is supported mostly by agriculture and industry. The town hosts grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants. There are many displays of historical architecture to look at, especially in the center of town on Broad Street. This is where you will find the imposing town hall from the 19th century and the 18th century cockpit which is the only unaltered cock fighting arena preserved in its original site in Britain.
Visitors will have no problem finding local and unique purchases to make in Welshpool. There are many shops that sell unique local items such as food and wine and local produce and locally crafted art pieces.
The school system in Welshpool is excellent. The high school has a very high expectation of achievement for its students who usually ranks among the highest in test results in Europe.
Sports are a great source of entertainment in Welshpool, both for the athletes and their fans. There is a local soccer club as well as rugby, cricket and hockey. While you are visiting Welshpool, make sure to take in a game and cheer your team to a win.
There are a multitude of activities for the outdoorsman to enjoy in the local area. For your enjoyment, there is horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, fishing and golfing. There is quite a bit of wildlife, and many people enjoy taking a walk and observing the birds and animals. You must also visit Powis Castle which is a source of pride for the local communities. In order to become a lord of this castle, the entire family had to sacrifice all of their claims to the Welsh royalty.
The best time to visit Welshpool is in June during the annual Festival of Transport where visitors can observe ancient and amazing vehicles. You might also enjoy coming at the end of May when summer is kicked off with the Welshpool Carnival.
