Southampton is a coastal town and as a result offers a wide variety of things to do. Whether you are coming for a day out or a weeks stay, there is plenty to fill up you days with. The following are just a few of the top attractions in this lovely English city.
Top of the wish list for those who have a passion for the theatre and all sorts of musical and dramatic production, the city\’s musical theatre offers a wide variety of musicals, plays and pantomimes, many of which are taken straight from London\’s West End. For those also into dance and comedy, the theatre caters for all different tastes and puts on productions throughout the year.
Southampton has a very rich history in British aviation and the hall of aviation is a must see for anyone interested in planes and their development. Here you can look into the stories of twenty six different companies and track the different planes they have engineered. There is also the chance to visit the history of the great spitfire plane, invented in the city.
The city is also very famous for all of the cruise ships that pass through its water and docks. Some of the worlds most famous ships have made pit-stops in the harbour and you can find some fantastic spots from which to view these magnificent feats of engineering. Also, the city plays host to a yearly boat show that brings in around 850 different types of boat from all over the world and attracts over 100,000 visitors.
The maritime museum also looks at all of the different cruise ships that have passed through the docks over the years. Most famous of all is the Titanic which sailed from the port in April 1912. From here is went on to suffer a tragic end in the Atlantic and all of this is depicted in the Titanic voices exhibition. Here, you can have a look at some of the original artifacts and photos from the ship and listen to personal accounts of what happened.
Finally, for those who just wish to spend some time doing some shopping and building up their wardrobe, the Westquay shopping centre offers everything you could want. On its opening in 2000, the centre was the largest city centre shopping area in Europe and boasted a bountiful variety of outlets.
